In 2006 Verizon consumed 8.9 billion kilowatt hours of electricity and generated more than 7.1 million metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO2). Using a standard widely used to measure environmental impact, Verizon generated 81 metric tons of CO2 for every $1 million of revenue—an improvement over 2005 and almost eight times better than the national average.

Energy-Saving Technology

Examples of ongoing efforts include:

  • Powering down and removing obsolete equipment in more than 400 buildings.
  • Installing micro-turbines fueled by natural gas in two central offices in California, cutting electricity use in half.
  • Taking steps to deploy fuel cell units nationwide to provide back-up power at remote terminals.
  • Expanding our use of energy-efficient Hypalon roofs on our buildings.
  • Starting trials of biodiesel fuel and lubricants in our fleet.

Waste Reduction

In 2006 Verizon:

  • Recycled more than 24,000 tons of paper and cardboard, along with 48,000 tons of telecommunications equipment.
  • Processed more than 70 million online payments, reducing paper usage by more than 400 tons.
  • Bought “green” when possible: 30 percent of office supply products had recycled content.
  • Collected 900,000 cell phones and 29 tons of batteries through Verizon's HopeLine phone recycling program.
